Bridging foundational quantum physics with practical public engagement has defined the career of Professor Juan Pablo Paz, whose work spans theoretical breakthroughs, community building, and science policy leadership.
Paz’s research addresses concepts essential for developing reliable quantum technologies. He co-authored the Hu-Paz-Zhang master equation, a foundational result in quantum theory. He played a leading role in characterizing the decoherence process, which is essential to understanding the transition from quantum to classical behavior, and was among the co-discoverers of the first perfect five-qubit quantum error correction code.
He has also been instrumental in building Argentina’s quantum ecosystem. He played a leading role in establishing two experimental laboratories at Buenos Aires, which are now among Argentina’s most active quantum research facilities. He has made quantum science accessible through Spanish-language publications for both the general public and university students.
His leadership roles have included serving four times as Director of the Physics Department at the University of Buenos Aires, currently directing the Physics Institute at CONICET, and serving as Vice Minister of Science and Technology of Argentina from 2019 to 2023. In these positions, he championed quantum science through dedicated national funding programs and co-founded Latin America’s most important quantum science meetings, fostering a collaborative regional community.
