Alexandra Olaya-Castro

Professor Alexandra Olaya-Castro is a leading theoretical physicist whose research focuses on quantum effects in biomolecular systems, particularly in photosynthesis. Her work has contributed to the emerging combination of quantum and biology through developing conceptual understanding and informing experimental efforts in this field.

Her academic work focuses on leading a research group at UCL, which combines quantum science with physical chemistry and biology to investigate quantum processes in biomolecules. In 2016, she was awarded the IoP Medal and the Maxwell Prize for her contributions to this field. In 2019, she became UCL’s first Vice‑Dean for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Faculty, reflecting her commitment to fostering inclusive academic environments. She is currently the Head of the Biological Physics section in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCL.

Outside the lab, Olaya-Castro engages the public on the intersection between quantum science and biology through exhibitions, television programs, podcasts, and talks, reaching millions worldwide. Notable appearances include BBC Four’s “The Secrets of Quantum Physics,” the 2016 Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition, a TEDx talk in Bogotá, and a Royal Institution discourse on quantum biology. She is recognized for her ability to translate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences and to inspire all communities to pursue STEM.
