Dr. Rupert Ursin is a pioneering physicist and entrepreneur whose work seamlessly bridges cutting-edge quantum research with real-world innovation.
As the founder of QTLabs—Quantum Technology Laboratories—and ZeroThird, he has established two technology-driven companies dedicated to transforming quantum science into deployable solutions for secure communication. While QTLabs delivers advanced technologies for satellite-based quantum communication, ZeroThird provides entanglement-based quantum key distribution systems and services. His entrepreneurial leadership has been central in moving quantum technologies from the laboratory into industry, shaping both the European and global quantum landscape.
As a researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Ursin achieved the first demonstration of quantum entanglement over 144 kilometers between the Canary Islands. This landmark experiment proved that quantum communication could overcome real-world atmospheric challenges and laid the groundwork for today’s satellite-based quantum networks. With more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and extensive international collaborations, Ursin has made significant contributions to the field while mentoring emerging talent. His scientific achievements and entrepreneurial ventures have influenced major initiatives in satellite quantum communication and fiber-based networks worldwide, establishing him as a visionary innovator and one of Europe’s most influential quantum entrepreneurs.
