As a professor at ETH Zurich and Texas A&M University and a concurrent industry pioneer, Dr. Helmut Katzgraber has made significant contributions to both quantum research and its practical applications. He has pioneered methods that are now used in industry to address complex computational problems and inform the development of future quantum applications.
During his time at Microsoft, Katzgraber led the team that launched the first beta of Azure Quantum, the first cloud service offering broad access to multiple quantum modalities. At Amazon, he directed a team identifying potential applications of quantum technologies, guiding the development of algorithms and hybrid approaches that combine classical and quantum methods to tackle real-world problems at scale.
In addition to research and industry leadership, Katzgraber advises quantum venture capital funds to ensure the development of use-case-relevant devices and software. Most recently, he joined 55 North in Denmark—the largest quantum-focused venture capital fund in the world—as chief science officer and general partner. He has published approximately 200 papers and patents, with recent work emphasizing practical quantum applications. His contributions span foundational research, industry impact, and ecosystem development, advancing both the science and deployment of quantum technologies.
