As well as his seminal contributions to quantum physics, Professor Paul Kwiat is recognized for his unique and creative approach to public engagement.

He is the creator and driving force behind LabEscape, the United States’ only “quantum-themed science-based escape room,” which, since 2016, has introduced over 16,000 visitors, from Boy Scouts to grandparents, to the wonders of quantum science. LabEscape transforms complex quantum concepts into interactive puzzles that require teamwork and creativity, all without requiring prior knowledge of physics.

Kwiat and his team have expanded LabEscape beyond Urbana, bringing it to events as varied as the Wisconsin Science Festival, Illinois State Fair, Quantum World Congress, and the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, as well as numerous science conferences. By engaging diverse audiences in non-traditional settings, LabEscape demystifies quantum science and inspires curiosity across generations. Through this innovative outreach, Professor Kwiat has combined entertainment with education, fostering public understanding of quantum and the excitement of scientific discovery.
