Quantum 100

Jonathan Home
Professor, ETH Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland
Not only has Professor Jonathan Home made significant contributions to his field of quantum research, but he has also helped shape national quantum policies through his engagement with government and industry.
At ETH Zurich, he mastered controlling ion motion for quantum information processing, enabling the implementation of autonomous quantum error correction, an essential component of scalable quantum computing. His work has been taken out of the research lab and put into practice, with quantum computing companies adopting the scalable hardware underpinned by his research group’s discoveries.
A passionate educator, Home received the student-voted ETH Golden Owl award, which recognises lecturers for exceptional teaching. Showing his commitment to education and outreach beyond academia, Professor Home is a member of the Swiss Quantum Commission of the Swiss Academy of Sciences, helping to shape national policy through the Swiss Quantum Initiative, which aims to advance Switzerland’s global contributions in quantum science. As well as outreach, Home created a truly unique way to communicate quantum—”Seeing Atoms,” the only exhibit worldwide where members of the public can see a single atom with the naked eye.
With his significant contributions to quantum science, education, and policy, Home has inspired students, peers, and industry alike.
