Christopher Monroe

Gilhuly Family Presidential Distinguished Professor, Duke University, Co-founder, IonQ, Durham, North Carolina, United States

Professor Christopher Monroe has published foundational quantum research over three decades, including the first quantum gate demonstration in 1995 and the first remote entanglement between qubits in 2007. Monroe leads an experimental research group at Duke University focused on quantum computing, investigating quantum information storage, processing, communication, and teleportation, as well as simulation of many-body quantum systems.

As co-founder and chief scientist of IonQ, the largest pure quantum computing company, he established one of the first companies in the world to commercialize atom-based quantum computers. Beyond research and entrepreneurship, Monroe played a foundational role in developing the National Quantum Initiative (NQI) in the United States, contributing to national quantum policy frameworks.

Not only a business and research leader, but Monroe’s colleagues and students also note his commitment to mentoring junior scientists as they establish their careers, supporting the development of the next generation of quantum researchers.
