Quantum 100

Kelvin Mpofu
Senior Researcher, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Pretoria, South Africa
Based in South Africa, Dr. Kelvin Mpofu is a quantum researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), where he is advancing the frontiers of quantum biosensing, photonics, computing, and machine learning.
His work addresses global inequalities in access to diagnostics with scalable biosensing platforms suitable for lower-resource settings. Thanks to his contributions, Mpofu has been selected as an Emerging Leader in the South African Quantum Technology Initiative (SAQuTi) group, a growing team of quantum researchers in South Africa’s expanding quantum ecosystem.
Mpofu is a valued mentor to his students and is active in the broader international community, serving on national innovation strategy panels to enhance collaboration between academic and industrial stakeholders. Mpofu’s vision is to make quantum technology accessible and beneficial to all, especially underrepresented communities, and to inspire a new generation of quantum innovators.
