100 Years of Quantum: From Pioneering Ideas to Emerging Technologies

The year 2025 marks the UNESCO International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, commemorating a century since the development of quantum mechanics and reflecting on its transformative influence across science and society. In this presentation, I will trace the key historical milestones that culminated in the rise of quantum mechanics and sparked its first technological revolution—giving rise to innovations such as the transistor, laser, and atomic clock.

Today, we are experiencing a second quantum revolution, characterized by breakthroughs in quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing, which are set to reshape computation, security, and high-precision measurements. I will also explore the emerging significance of quantum phenomena in biological systems, pointing to the far-reaching implications of quantum science beyond traditional physics. Looking forward, the horizon of quantum science and technology continues to expand—opening new frontiers that we are only beginning to explore.
