Workshop Entangle This VI: 100 Years of Quantum

Dear Quantum Community,

We are happy to announce the workshop “Entangle This VI: 100 Years of Quantum” to take place in Madrid from the 15th to the 19th of September 2025. The event is organized by the quantum groups at IFT and IFF (CSIC), and takes place in the context of the 2025 International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ).

The workshop will take place at the Royal Botanical Garden in downtown Madrid and aims to bring together experts at the forefront of the various subfields of quantum science and technology. It will also include a social program and an outreach event at the Thyssen Museum.

Registrations and abstract submissions (both for contributed talks and posters) are currently open until May, although early submissions are encouraged. See the event’s website for more information.

About Quantum Methods for Hydrogen Storage

In the context of celebrating the International Year of Quantum Physics, a lecture and discussion panel will be held at the Faculty of Science, Misrata University. The event will highlight scientific achievements related to quantum physics and how it can contribute to developing innovative solutions to energy challenges. Attendees will be invited to participate in discussions about the future of this research and its role in enhancing innovation in the energy sector.

The upcoming lecture will focus on “Quantum Methods for Hydrogen Storage” and the role of quantum physics in this context. It will showcase how hydrogen storage techniques can benefit from quantum principles, thereby improving efficiency and safety.

Professor Abdulwahab Al-Salabi will discuss how the quantum properties of particles, such as superposition and entanglement, can be used to develop new materials capable of storing hydrogen more effectively. The lecture will also cover potential applications of these technologies in the field of sustainable energy, particularly concerning clean energy production.

Unraveling the process of Building for Quantium, with Marina Otero Verzier, Manuel Correa, and Aran García-Lekue

In this new session of the public program Organismo Year One, Marina Otero, architect and researcher, and Manuel Correa, filmmaker, and researcher, will present the research and creative process behind the film that accompanies the video installation Building for Quantum. This work will be featured in the upcoming 19th edition of the Venice Architecture Biennale— “Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective” —and will premiere during the event’s inauguration in May this year.

The film Building for Quantum follows the construction of the building that will host one of the few quantum computers in the world, the first in Spain. As quantum computing redefines the boundaries of knowledge, this film, still in process, examines the imaginaries and aspirations surrounding the arrival of this technology at the Quantum Basque Center in Donostia-San Sebastián. The film navigates the intersection of the physical and the philosophical within quantum architecture—juxtaposing the tangible, ordinary materials of brick and mortar with the meticulous precision required to sustain near-perfect vacuum chambers at temperatures colder than deep space.

The event will feature Aran García-Lekue, physicist and PhD in materials science and technology, who specializes in the development and application of computational tools for the simulation of quantum electronic properties at the nanoscale. With her, we will explore the principles of these theories, which have been counterintuitive for humans so far, and the horizons that may emerge from their instrumentalization. The three will engage in a conversation to unravel the potentials of this science and the paradigm shift it represents compared to classical mechanics, according to which we have traditionally organized our ways of living.

Quantum Birds

Annie McEwen went to a mountain in Pennsylvania to help catch some migratory owls. Then Scott Weidensaul peeled back the owl’s feathery face disc, so that she could look at the back of its eyeball. No owls were harmed in the process, but this brief glimpse into the inner workings of a bird sent her off on a journey to a place where fleshy animal business bumps into the mathematics of subatomic particles. With help from Henrik Mouristen, we hear how one of the biggest mysteries in biology might finally find an answer in the weird world of quantum mechanics, where the classical rules of space and time are upended, and electrons dance to the beat of an enormous invisible force field that surrounds our planet.
