Quantum Revolutions in Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet Show)
Quantum Revolutions in Wayang Kulit (QRWK) presents an exciting histo-biographical evolution of quantum theory using shadow puppet play, aimed for general audiences. Triggered by the ‘black body radiation crisis’ circa 1900, the so-called 1st Quantum Revolution led to a major shift in our understanding of the physical reality, in particular of the microscopic world. QRWK traces the contributions of pioneers such as Planck, Bohr and Einstein, and highlights the scientific and technological breakthroughs, as well as the philosophical debates about realism and nonlocality. This is followed by the rendition of the 2nd Quantum Revolution or Quantum 2.0 that started in the mid of 21st century with maverick characters, like Feynman and Bell. Quantum physics received impetus for the development of quantum technologies that use exotic properties such as quantum superposition, coherence and entanglement. QRWK is produced and to be performed by a group of 2nd year physics students (#36) taking SIF2005 Statistical Physics (Sem 1, 2024/2025) at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, under the guidance of Prof Sithi V Muniandy and Tey Lian Seng (PhD scholar in Quantum Information). QRWK will be staged at the Department of Physics, Universiti Malaya (16 Jan 2025, 10.00-11.00am KL Time). QRWK is an artscience outreach initiative led by Prof Sithi V Muniandy from the Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics. QRWK is sponsored by the FRGS grant (FP043-2024 ) under the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education.
